One day State level Conference Against Sumangali Scheme

The one day Conference was held at Tirunelveli on 4th August 2012 Nearly 1000 rural young women and mostly Sumangali victims from various parts of southern districts took active in and it had greater impact on the communities, and the adolescent girls affected by Sumangali scheme. The conference was unique and significant on several aspects:

  • It was inaugurated by a High Court Judge D. Hari Paranthaman, who is known for his strong views on labour related and human rights issues.  Mr.Vidyasagar, Child protection Specialist, UNICEF, Chennai delivered the key note address and Prof.Sekhar, Department of Psychiatric Social Work, NIMHANS, Bangalore gave a special address.
  • The high number of participants, who attended the conference, is mostly rural young women, our key constituencies. They attentively listened to the speakers and the deliberations of the Conference. Many adolescent girls, who had been in the mills under the scheme took active part in the conference.
  • Variety of issues touched upon by the speakers in the conference - importance of adolescent period, mental health issues of young adolescent girls working in such inhuman conditions, health issues of adolescent girls, labour rights violations, gender concerns, livelihood support and existing social protection schemes, campaign and advocacy efforts by civil society groups, needed legal interventions on behalf of the victims.
  • At the end of the conference, 18 resolutions were adopted.
